Boxee has fixed some of the issues I highlighted while looking at software updates. See below for updates. ----- Out of the box, Boxee runs the familiar beta version of the Box software that I'm familiar with as a former Boxee user. Everything works fine in my tests, although the edges of the screen are cut off a little (not enough to cause problems). After exploring all the options, I found that a firmware update for Boxee to version 1.0 is available. I installed it, restarted the device and it automatically launched a quick and easy screen calibration program. This calibration proved to be useful because the original firmware had some display issues (like cut edges of the screen) on my TV. Version 1.0 contains a new and simplified user interface. I had a hard time getting directions right away and was a bit disappointed that the experience was different from what I expected. My main gripe with the new interface is that it now takes a few extra mouse clicks to access local files (i.e. anything on connected drives or on your home network). These are my stuff and I want the video player to be able to play them first. The old interface made it very easy to switch between your videos and all available videos once you knew where the selection was. After a minute of installation with the default firmware, I was able to select apps on the home screen and only see my app. Now I have to use other, more complex and time consuming ways to do the same, like Files > Show or Show > Files. The new interface makes it easy to start searching (just start typing) and is very attractive. I would like to post my videos. The web content is good, but my own content should be better than it. I don't think new users will have problems with the interface, but experienced users should know what you want to change. network content. I had no problems streaming SD, 720p HD H.264 and DivX files from a NAS to a Boxee Box over Wireless-N. Online video plays well, but some online video sources are not compatible. For example, playing a video on a Fancast will open a web browser and display the web page and video in a small window. You need to use the remote control to hover over the small "full screen" button and click on it to play the video in full screen. Good luck to him on the couch 10-20 meters from the TV! This is important because the new Boxee app puts online content at the center of its hottest movie and series pages. Being able to see offers you didn't pay for (ads supported) is great, but you'll have to look for a fullscreen button that looks different on every website. The apps, on the other hand, are great. TED and YouTube work the way you expect and are available with them. Netflix and Hulu Plus programs promised; Boxee is taking action and hopes to launch it by the end of the year (early next year for Hulu Plus). I hope they do this for them. All competing devices support Netflix, and in my opinion, Netflix is one of the most attractive sources for content storage. Connecting your online Boxee account to Twitter and Facebook may seem complicated at first, but watching the videos your friends share is really great. The RSS feed is also great. On the Boxee website, you can subscribe to a wide range of video and audio content (podcasts). You can then launch an RSS feed and view it. That's very beautiful. But I don't share what I see on TV with my Facebook friends and Twitter followers, but I can if I want to. I think Boxee would be more useful if more people I know used it. Another UI issue is that the Watch Later queue shows the most recent additions at the top and you can't sort them. Scroll down to find the next episode of the show you're watching in the queue. If I'm going to queue videos, doesn't that mean I want to watch them in order, not in reverse order? Equipment The unique shape of the chest is controversial, but it is very small and can be hidden somewhere. The remote uses HF instead of IR to communicate with the box. So, unlike most (if not all) other components, you don't need a viewport. In fact, I decided to put the BoxeeBox behind the TV; I can't even see it, but the controller works great! It would be even better if Boxee integrated right into my TV. The background is very capable. Until new video formats become available, I see no need for Boxee or D-Link to urgently upgrade their equipment. I hope they continue to improve the software and updates to Boxee Box will be made available. The overall impressions of the devices are excellent. The box is small and quiet (at least in the room), the RF remote is great, and the hardware usually costs more than buying an ATOM/ION nettop and LCD remote (beta) from Boxee (beta). To be honest, Boxee did not support me in making many changes to my user interface at the same time as this product was released. Boxee 1.0 looks great, better than ever, but it's so simple that it now requires me to press additional buttons to access my content, which I consider a bad move. However, I like the product and quickly get used to the new interface. I still think it's a great product that non-experts are trying to use and it still hasn't done well. I am very disappointed with this and hope that the software will be updated to make accessing local and online content easier and faster. It's hard for me to give this product 3 stars, but I don't think it's worth 4 or 5. Some software updates and content provider agreements can greatly improve the user experience (fix this issue in fullscreen or provide a shortcut!). I'm looking forward to the Netflix app and plan to give it an extra star as soon as it becomes available. ----- Firmware updates. Update 11/25/2010: Boxee updated the firmware on Thanksgiving to improve playback and stability issues. This fixed a rare issue (since I wrote my review) where some MP4/H.264 source files would start playing with audio but no video. Update 12/13/2010: This is a major UI update! Boxee has updated its software to allow users to post local content in the Shows and Movies sections (huge icons at the top of the home screen) or prioritize online content. This is achieved in the most illegal way: after updating the firmware, you will simply be asked if you are using the box for local or online content. If you select Local, the main Shows and Movies sections will have local content by default, while online content will be hidden one level deeper in the list. You can change and optimize these settings for shows, movies, and apps independently in Settings > General > Menus. Thanks to Boxee for listening to the users and suggesting this change. The update also added an hourly scan to your local content folders and an icon that allows you to instantly start a new scan on your local show and movie screens. The hourly scan is a major update to the daily scan option, and the new location of the rescan command is easier than before (under Settings > File Sources > [common name]). Boxee has also added ratings (AZ and newest) for shows and movies, but unfortunately not in the Watch Next queue. There are also new AZ listings in the Local Shows and Local Movies sections to help you navigate faster. Sorry, Netflix or Hulu Plus is not available yet. However, I think the user interface and functionality of Boxee Box is very well designed. Now they only need to match their competitors' online content choices. Update 1/20/2011: Boxee has updated the firmware to include Vudu support, a new sort option to ignore "A" and "The" when sorting runtime names (if desired), and a few minor fixes. The browser is now more readable on TV and more opens online videos in full screen mode. I also found a way to double-click an online video to make it full screen if it doesn't even open: [menu] > [middle button] (select the double arrow icon). Vudu 1080p online movie rental software offers interesting content and great video quality. Boxee Box is still in dire need of Netflix and Hulu Plus to catch up and beat the competition. But now I am convinced that it is the best video player for local content and a quality competitor to Google TV and Roku for online content. Netflix coming soon; Then I'll give it another star because then it'll be on par with the competition's feature set. Update 02/14/2011: After a long wait and (unfortunately) delay, the Netflix app has finally arrived on the Boxee Box with this firmware update. The Netflix interface is fast and HD streaming looks great. Hopefully Hulu Plus will be available soon.

I bought the Boxee Box right after it was released in 2010 and wrote a terrible one star review after testing it. Since then, the Boxee Box has received several firmware updates. As of July 2011, I don't think the Boxee Box deserves a star, which is why I'm dropping this review. Check out this review from July 2011. Let me start by saying that I am new to the Boxee platform. Sometimes I watched a missed episode of Network TV on my MacBook connected to the TV; But only as a last resort. I visit youtube.com about 4 times a year and no more than 10 minutes. I pay for DirecTV, Sirius XM and have 4 network cameras. In short, apart from the fact that I have been hacking computers since the early 80s, I am not the target audience for this product. General notes: - The case is almost silent. This is a very good thing. - The box is very small (the size of a baseball box). - The box consumes 12 watts of electricity during operation, idle and standby. If it is completely disabled, it consumes 0 watts. When turned on, it works at a temperature of just over 100 degrees. - Although the unit itself is small, the small power supply in the outlet is larger than usual, bulky and annoying. The remote control is exciting (somewhat) and probably one of the best things about this device. It is also the key hardware component of the solution that makes the Boxee Box such a problem. The remote is radio frequency which means it cannot control most of the devices in your home. Similarly, your other remotes cannot control the Boxee unless you add an IR adapter. No need to press a button to turn on Boxee Box and TV. This is my main disappointment as the Boxee Box remote has basically 3 buttons and 4 way navigation. Since the button layout is exactly the same and the buttons are black, I often push it backwards and hit the wrong buttons. This is annoying and often disrupts what I'm watching/listening to because I accidentally log out of Pandora or Viewer. I bought my Boxee over 8 months ago and it still disappoints me every time I use it. The advantage of the remote is that when you flip it over, it has a decent sized keyboard! This keychain works like a keyboard when you use the search functions. However, in practice, my use does not involve entering a lot of data, so I do not use the keyboard. Unfortunately, I cannot reliably evaluate the Pause/Rewind/Rewind capabilities of the Boxee Box. Firmware can't solve this... Found a way to improve the remote mode: connected a wireless mouse and keyboard. The wireless mouse makes navigating the Boxee Box menus much easier. Unfortunately, the mouse does not work to jump somewhere in a song or video. Also, when browsing the web on the Boxee Box, the wireless mouse cannot scroll up and down and the scroll wheel is completely disabled. Internet Video The video quality of some online content is surprisingly good. In general, if you are paying for content, it will look as good as your cable/satellite provider's best HD channel. In general, when you get free content, it can be really bad. There are a lot of movie trailers on Wired and to be honest, I can't say I'm watching "uploaded" content. Picture quality compared to the HD quality I get from DirecTV. I found it effective. I have a 6Mbps internet connection, which isn't necessarily a downside, so I'm sure this helps. However, video quality can vary greatly. Some stuff on youtube has viewing restrictions (although that's the nature of youtube, not Boxee Box). My wife and I tried to watch an episode of CSI Miami on Boxee Box, but ended up giving up. Not because "CSI Miami" is pointless and stupid, but because the series is too embarrassing to stop or navigate through. At some point, I tried to freeze the screen, but accidentally pressed the "menu" button. They took us out of the show, took us out of our seat. Then we tried to restart it and put it in the old place. It didn't work with the Boxee Box. In the 2010-2011 women's basketball season, I watched a few games on Boxee Box because they were only available online. I had to be careful not to touch anything while watching the game on the screen, but overall it worked well and I enjoyed watching the same content on the laptop. I am a Netflix streaming customer and Boxee Box has a Netflix app. The program works well. Top notch playback with great video and sound. The remote control rears its ugly head because the Netflix app doesn't obey the pause button on the Boxee Box. this is very annoying. You can use the best options. INTERNET MUSIC Using the Boxee Box Pandora Application. I am your quality Pandora musical instruments, the best product for Pandora is Boxee Box. You can use iPhone, use Pandora and use it on AppleTV, use it on NO.sh. U Musici is a library, library and format for MP3 and Mac.
