4 A worthy successor to the Tivo Series 2

It is finally a worthy successor to the Tivo Series 2. Although there used to be 2 Tivo HD's, their relative price and lack of lifetime subscription options made them financially attractive compared to a DVR from a cable company. If you buy directly from Tivo, there is a lifetime subscription option (...) for those who already have a lifetime subscription. That makes it an attractive deal even if it's been nearly 30 months. If you've never used Tivo before, I'd say it beats Comcast's ugly, poorly designed user interface. If you're on Verizon, it will level up, but not as dramatically. If you've used Tivo before, you'll feel right at home. It's basically an 8 year old Tivo interface that's been beefed up here and there with support links to Netflix and Blockbuster for streaming movies. If you are not capturing from an antenna, a Tivo M-Series cable card is required. If you're not sure, call your cable provider to see if they support it. Verizon struggled with this issue, though I finally found someone who confirmed that Verizon's cable card supports multicast. However, the Verizon technician they sent out was helpful and completed the job in about 15 minutes. 60, you have to go back to 1080i. This doesn't appear anywhere on Tivo's website, although it probably doesn't make much of a difference. SD Tivo, on the other hand, works fine. You can also use Tivo Desktop (free download) to stream to your computer. You can even save it to view later or on your phone (Google "kmttg tivo"). I will not write a review of the Tivo interface. Lots of people have done better than me, so google reviews. You should note that although the new menus are in high definition, once you exit the main menus you will be back to the old 480/SD menus. The only reason I can tell is that the TV screen flickers a bit until it syncs to the lower resolution. This version of the Tivo has a backlit remote control, although it is not activated by default. It also supports separate volume and mute with the A/V receiver, though you can't turn it on with the remote. My A/V receiver didn't work with the codes provided, but chatting with Tivo led me to a page on their support site where you can find Tivo's new "learn" remote. That worked. When using Tivo chat support, agents are knowledgeable and patient. I had a brief incident where I was messing around with the various menus where the HDMI audio would get out of sync with the TV. A quick resync through the A/V receiver had me up and running in seconds. Time will tell if this is an isolated issue or a bug. Previous Tivos worked with Amazon Video on Demand (which works quite well). You now have additional options for choosing HD images, as well as Blockbuster and Netflix download options. Note that there is a fee for these types of on-demand movies, similar to what you'd expect from your cable company. However, this feature is fully compatible with the global search feature. Suppose you are interested in a program like Chuck. If you search for the app, it not only finds upcoming episodes on TV, it also gives you a full episode guide, giving you options to pick up cable/air or for unavailable shows. You can download them on Tivo to view them. Very smart and practical. Overall, it's an expensive purchase, but Tivo does its best not to make you feel stupid for buying it.

4 2 Here you surf smoothly with Premiere XL, even with Comcast!

I've bought a TiVo or two since Series 1. Some observations: 1.) I bought one here on Amazon and one directly from TiVo. Buying from Amazon is so much better than buying from the manufacturer... TiVo shipped them with a weird shipping quote, while Amazon Prime ships them in 2 days and the tracking is always accurate. I had a TiVo upgrade offer but was charged taxes, etc. the price at the time was around $429, and Amazon's $499 price was offset by the $50 Amazon OnDemand credit, so a bargain for Amazon. If you don't have a TiVo upgrade offer, no problem. 2.) These units are amazing. Of course, some people will complain about losing their beautiful watches on the front, etc. it was with Comcast. Comcast in my area (Pittsburgh) is driving me crazy. In reality, these new TiVos were impulse buys, as Comcast upset us that we couldn't "move" the two DVRs we had recordings on to our new address. They said it would. If it was not possible and they packed the boxes and sent them to us, they have to give new ones. Yes, we lost all of our writing on the box. idiots I was surprised when the installer implemented CableCards and we had two up and running in 15 minutes. It's a bit different than my first TiVo CableCard setup last year. But a few things that probably worked in my favor: A.) When I scheduled the appointment, I noticed that the installer had to bring M (multi-stream) cards instead of S (single stream) cards. I was also told that the installer should bring 4 as it is not uncommon to have faulty cards in inventory. I have insisted that these notes be high on the agenda. Lo and behold, the installer arrived on time with the M cards and 4 of them! B.) The installer hadn't done much work and was more than happy to let me run the process. I installed the boxes and managed the installation, updated the latest system software, etc. I just had to plug in the M card before the appointment. I also showed you the best way to take a photo of the CableKart's iPhone (for serial number, etc.) *before inserting the card (b). /c after inserting a card, its removal may generate new pairing information again, etc.) and remembers the relevant information that appears on the screen after inserting the card. I can't tell you how many previous encounters with CableCards I've had because the installer scaled things so badly, constantly opening them for information or to check if they were 0 (zero) or O (oh). . I wish Comcast would allow customers to pick up the cards and install them themselves... I thought it would in some areas, but the Pittsburgh market doesn't seem to be doing it, as I've asked several people (on the phone, in person at the service center). etc.).C.) You have no control over this, BUT I WAS LUCK - the person in the back office that the installer called to activate the CableCards was *FINE*. We did not have to repeat the digit of a number and the person behind entered the information correctly, told us to go to the information screen and wait for the MSG number to pass 3500 and voila: all channels, even the premium channels, worked. perfect from the start. Comcast seems to have done better with CableCards as the FCC requires their new set-top boxes to have CableCards in them (permanently installed, but they are CableCards and work just like in your system. Third Party Boxes Third Party O , Admittedly after years of poor service from Comcast, I was finally overdue for a great experience 4.) I received it within two weeks. I don't know why other people have these issues other than luck with the draw, but my experience was perfect 5.) Found iTivo for Mac - amazing! Rip and convert TiVo shows (no copyrighted content) into a variety of formats, and even import them into iTunes for automatic transfer to iPhone for on-the-go viewing. What am I disappointed in? A few things: Typical TiVo moves: * Why can't they connect to these boxes wirelessly? Having an external adapter sucks. * With that in mind, why launch your latest boxes and then plan to add a wireless-n adapter to the box in a month or two? Being stuck with Wireless-G to transfer notes is ugly. Yes, you can use a third party wireless bridge etc. You can use. and I used to do this stuff, but these days I just want out-of-the-box solutions. *TiVo actually released these boxes before they were polished. It's a bit ugly that the HD menus are quite up to date and if you go into the deeper menus the old standard stuff is still there. It can be a bit slow when working on the box. I still hate that watching digital channels is slower than old school TVs, and the TiVo has about 3-5 seconds of gray screen between each channel. *TiVo is a bit off-putting in its subscription model. Basically, their goal is to lock you into a contract that you can't escape from. I already paid them an early termination fee and wasn't happy about it, but hey, I signed what I signed and I knew everything...Overall I'm very happy with our purchase of these two and our luck with CableKarts. This trip. After paying $16 for the Comcast DVR for 2 years, we are about to recoup our hardware purchase, plus we have more features/flexibility. I hope the above was helpful - always know what you are getting into with technology. Reviews from people who have no idea cable cards are needed/used are useless - this information is everywhere. If you're not up for the challenges of developing new technology, just stick with the cable company boxes—you'll have some stability with fewer feature changes.

two Buggy, slow and inconsistent UI

This is my fourth TiVo box and I only upgraded because my Series 3 hard drive died (2nd time in 3 years) and I didn't want to pay Weaknees $250 for a replacement 1TB hard drive. TiVo offered me a $100 upgrade. I had an offer on Premiere XL, so I bought it for "only" $399 and bought it directly from TiVo. I've had the device for about a week now and I'm definitely not too excited about it. As others have pointed out, the UI is very choppy and there are many areas where it falls back to the older 480i Series2 or Series3 screens. There's still a discrepancy between the Netflix and Amazon pages (which also use lower resolution screens) and the rest of the interface. Worse yet, when the device changes resolution from 1080i to display lower resolution screens, the screen often flickers or turns gray for a while. It's still unacceptable for a company that has built its reputation on a simple and attractive user interface to produce software like this, but I'm getting used to it. But my wife saw these links the other day and said, "Oh, that looks horrible." My device crashed twice in about 6 days, and I mean Hard Freeze. I had to unplug the device and wait for the reboot process both times. If TiVo makes such a basic app, they should put a reset button on the front of the device. These crashes are an absolute pain, especially when the system is in the middle of logging. In terms of features, the system still doesn't stream from the media server unless I install third-party software (beta in my case). The system still wants to copy the entire file, although it can start reading after the copy process has started. Given the competition of extenders from different companies, this is simply unacceptable. Did I mention that the user interface is slow? Yeah, it's slowwwwwww TiVo also (at the request of copyright owners, I think) blocks more and more recorded content so you can't save it to another computer or media server to read later. The vast majority of my posts in this box now prohibit copying to another device. I respect copyright and am very concerned that TiVo treats everyone like scammers. All in all, I don't know what TiVo has been working on for 3 or 4 years. The software on this box is clearly immature: no better than beta quality and might as well be alpha with all the crashes. Of course not entirely. Hopefully this will improve as TiVo releases updates, but my 10-year love affair with TiVo is strained at the moment. This system is NOT a worthwhile upgrade from the Series 3 and I really wonder how long TiVo will last with the quality of what they are getting from the start.
