So far, at least, this TV seems to be the budget leader among the new 52-inch sets for 2009. After 2 weeks of ownership, I'm very happy with my purchase. I watch it without any special settings and the Blu-ray looks great and reception of the ATSC digital broadcast via the RCA ANT1500 large passive omnidirectional digital antenna (white) is excellent. I bought this pot because it was the right price and had the basics, no flaws, which is what I wanted. Previous models of the Aquos line also received good reviews. This is my first large LCD so I have nothing to compare it to. The specs look like a more mature version of last years, which is great if you don't want the dubious benefits (and cost) of things like 240Hz mode, LED backlighting or an ultra-thin screen. The built-in sound is good with hidden subwoofers and I use it for live TV (eg news and sports) but for movies I hook it up to an AV surround amp. Looks good mounted on the wall (much nicer than the stand). Advantages: - 10-bit screen - Screen without glare. I have it next to a large window, and while you can definitely see the light reflecting, it's not a sharp reflection, it's a matte look. And the screen brightness can overcome any reflection except in dark scenes. - 120Hz mode I don't notice any difference, so I tend to leave everything in movie mode, even baseball - good subjective response time, nothing to compare - good subjective black, no comparison needed - lots of connections - maybe. It's nice to mention OSD inputs after ordering, that's important for me :) Cons: - No PIP, I don't care - No DLNA/internet connection. I'm connected to a MediaPC so this wouldn't be necessary except for a firmware update which would have to be done via the USB port (I don't know if the end user will be able to do this) - USB port it is only good for maintenance eg. download home images - again with MediaPC this is not necessary. Shipping via Amazon/CEVA was set up by very nice guys, they brought it, I downloaded it, put it on the stand (I took it out later) and got it working, which was exactly what I wanted and expected. No dead pixels. I hope I don't have to use the 15 month warranty (12 months plus 3 more for online registration).

I bought this TV yesterday and it worked in no time. I have successfully connected the Cox HD DVR, Roku (Netflix device) and Pioneer DVD player (1080p scale) to the TV...all with new HDMI cables. Visually this TV looks great, I love the piano black color and the slight champagne gradient on the bottom...I think it would look better if we mounted it on the wall (wife loves the look too). On first launch, I was greeted with a few simple setup questions, all neatly organized into a very easy-to-read menu system. After that, I turned on the Cox HD DVR. I went to a basketball game that was broadcast and it was broadcast in 1080i. Just wow. Good image quality... and I haven't changed any settings yet. After watching a few more channels, I switched to my son's Cars DVD (a Pixar movie) to test the possibility of upscaling to 1080p and 120Hz. I've never been able to tell the difference in department stores, but at Cars at Home it was very noticeable and looked great. The animations were smoother, took some getting used to, but now I like it. Some may not like it, but I think many will. SD channels look surprisingly good. I expected them to look silly on a TV this size, but no. Later that night I started tweaking the video settings to get better blacks and accurate colors (to my eyes anyway). It took about 30-40 minutes, but I think I got everything set up to my liking and it looks better than the original settings. Black people are very good. For $1,468 plus shipping, this is a great TV. Maybe it doesn't have all the latest bells and whistles...but for some of us who don't need or want the extra cost, it's fine (eg ethernet port, usb port, 240hz, etc.) Only 2 small negatives that I encountered: 1) Sound is, but this is expected...most TVs are not surprised. The sound is very clear and voices are easily heard/understood... but no bass. So the film seems a bit weak in the sound department. We will be adding a soundtrack soon. 2) I think the viewing angle could be a little better. When you move to the edges of the TV, the picture blurs a little. I was able to reduce some of this by adjusting the backlight level and contrast/brightness. But it could be better. However, the backrest on this unit swivels, so we tilt it towards the couch or chair we're sitting on and the problem is solved.

Having owned this TV for a few months now, I thought it would be helpful to share some tips and tricks I've learned: PROBLEM: WRONG MATERIAL All my A/V equipment (360, PS3, Wii, Samsung DTB - H260F) via HDMI Sharp Aquos LC- It's connected to the 52E77U for output to my Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver. Turning the receiver off (and on again), the TV kept getting this error: "An incompatible audio signal was received, check the output signal." It only appears for a few seconds and only when I switch devices, resolutions or anything else. It's still pretty annoying. Connecting the device directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error; the only time it wasn't was when PCM 44.1/48kHz was connected to channel 2. Unfortunately, unlike other TVs I've ever owned, the Sharp doesn't have a menu option to mute the sound. The silence didn't help either. Solution? Set the volume to 0. No more errors! PROBLEM: DEVICE FAILS TO REGISTER (DVI -> HDMI) When I first got this TV, I connected my Mac Mini with a DVI -> HDMI cable. After some time of use, the TV will stop recognizing that the Mac Mini is connected. Apparently, every time the Mac Mini restarted or went to sleep, Sharp refused to acknowledge that it was already connected. Solution? To physically turn the TV off and on (instead of pressing the power button) and disable sleep mode on your Mac. I still have to occasionally do this shutdown jump - to update the system, for example - but not as much as when sleep is active. I guess that's the price you pay for a nice 1080p HDMI signal versus a 1600x1200 VGA letterbox signal, which is the maximum this TV supports. CALIBRATION SETTINGS This TV has some blue issues in high contrast areas. The best settings I've found are, in the order they appear in the menu: OPC: Off Backlight: +6 (you can turn it down a bit if needed) Contrast: +36 Brightness: -6 Color: +1 Color: + 1 Sharpness: -1 CMS Color / Saturation / Value: 0 Color Temperature: Low (Move away from Middle for color devices like Mac or OTA TV) Gain: +11 G Gain: 0 B Gain: -10 Fine Motion Enhanced: Off (leave Off for Sports if you want) On Contrast: Off Gamma Adjustment: 0 Movie Mode: Off (I used Advanced (Low) for Sports) Digital Noise Reduction: Off Monochrome: Off OPC Range: +16 Max, -16 Min (disabled anyway)
