I've had this plasma pet for about a month and I'm still excited. Like other reviewers, I was on the fence about the Panasonic vs. Samsung. I wanted something bigger than 60 inches and wanted a plasma to keep the price reasonable. It was a Panasonic VT65 or GT65 or a Samsung D8000 or D7000. I've read a lot of point and counterpoint threads on the AVForum site over the past few months...and seeing a lot about this 64D8000, I jumped on it and I'm very happy with my choice. Pictured: Amazing.. Out of the box it was midnight black and pure bright white.. I mean the first thing I saw when I saw the Boston Bruins play in the Stanley Cup. .. the white sweaters of black ice cream. it was amazing. A close-up of the Bruins uniform made it look like the TV was off in that part of the screen. Really Nice Blu-ray definitely looked better. The blacks are back and the colors are vibrant... TRON: LEGACY looked AWESOME!!! When I thought I had seen everything, I went to the Advanced Options menu and entered the result of a professional calibration of an AVForum tester. It took a while to get to all the RGB settings, but it was worth it. (probably saved me hundreds) After my "calibration" I saw the true power of this Samsung. The colors came to life. And the contrast and skin tones become more realistic. The black was inky (admittedly a familiar but very apt word to describe these blacks) and darker than before! So I thought the picture was great, but now it's almost perfect! I honestly don't see how even the very popular and expensive Panasonic VT series can beat this... (According to CNet reviews, they barely beat this TV in terms of picture quality). But you won't be disappointed with this Samsung. I'm no TV expert, but I've owned many HDTVs over the past decade and I'm still with the latest one. Plasma isn't going away anytime soon...it's a big, shiny, beautiful beast. Better if you calibrate or "calibrate" Design: Looks great when closed The dark titanium bezel is attractive (darker than pictured here) with a nice glass bezel giving it an elegant look. The stand, I agree, is ugly with the chrome spider legs... but you haven't snagged that thing yet. This thing is meant to hang on the wall. It's surprisingly slim for a 64-inch Plasma. The screen is slightly reflective, so it looks good when closed, but plan accordingly if you want it in a room with lots of windows. The reflection will be obvious. The remote has a nice keyboard to type on, and I love the flip-up design...but that keyboard needs to be backlit! It's useless in the dark. There is an app for cell phones that I haven't tried yet. 3D: I've only watched Directv's 3D channels, so I haven't experienced 3D yet (no Blu-ray 3D, although I'm ready for that). What I saw was magnificent. I received two free glasses with batteries and paid batteries. 3D is fun to watch and crisp in HD. It's still a trick in my book and I don't see much until I get sick. Conclusion: 3D looks good on this TV (dimmed but still crisp and nice), but I bought it for its 2D picture... 3D is good and I hope to try Blu-ray 3D in a near future. .Smart TV: Like the 3D function, it's also great. But that's not necessary in my book. I still use my computer for Internet functions and YouTube videos, not my TV. That said, I think this format of internet connection is nice and smooth. It's not as smooth as on a PC or iPad, but it works well enough. And it has built-in Wi-Fi, so I had to try it. I was hooked and kept coming back to it for the occasional sports score or YouTube video. Samsung did better than I expected with this "smart TV"... I think some people, not me, will find it much more useful. Cons: Ok, so it's not perfect. I will mention a few things that people will surely notice. The first is the reflective screen. I've also noticed this in my windowless basement when the lights are on and the scene on the TV is dark...this TV is designed for viewing in a dimly lit dark room. Second, if you've read the Plasma, you've heard the "buzz". Apparently Samsung had some trouble with the buzz. I tried to see it now, but I couldn't. Then, in a quiet scene from the movie, I sat down in the middle of that TV and turned my head away from the screen to listen. To be clear, it's not a loud "whirlwind" and I'm not complaining about it, but if you're focused on a quiet scene in front of the TV and turn your head (screen towards your ear) and hear it. i.e. you may hear a slight constant "tick-tock". I can't imagine many people will complain, but I know some will... And finally, again, if you're reading this model, you can hear the anti-reflective coating on the screen peeling off at the top. I have to say my top two edges are bare at the ends (or not attached at all).. so I got it and it doesn't affect the actual picture or anything so I'm back to not not complain or play with . But if it gets worse, I will definitely call Samsung about this known issue. That said, that doesn't take away from my high opinion of this TV, and it's only noticeable when you get really close and see it. Overall: I got this for the big, bold, graphic and solid design, and it didn't disappoint. Blu-ray is unreal! The sport looks better than I can imagine. And the 3D and SMART TV features are nice once in a while. And despite a few bugs that don't affect me directly, it's almost perfect. 9.5 out of 10 for me.

My wife and I purchased the pn51d8ooo from Paul's TV a week ago. I bet we will come out of the store with the LED/LCD model. The salesperson was very helpful in explaining the features of the models we were reviewing. This ultimately led us to this model to review. I found it strange that since this store tried to sell a plasma on commission (more expensive than comparable LED/LCDs), it quickly became clear that this salesman (Nick) doesn't know what Kali is. no talking about it, but we wanted to get the best product for the money. This model is more complete than anything else. It has full web browsing capabilities (yes it does - you can actually browse the web, shop on eBay or Amazon, Google etc. buy accessories The showroom picture looked great. Although not as bright as the LED models, the colors are more .A natural for me.Blacks were richer (the lead blacks were more gray than the blacks when viewed from an angle).We paid 2,069.00 $ which included a 3D starter kit (two glasses and five 3D movies) Great remote control on a standard side TV remote but flip it over and you get a full QWERTY keyboard and other keys that make internet browsing easier. I have to say my wife was concerned that we didn't like the plasma as much as the high brightness of the LED model After we got the tv from our house it took us a few days to set it up while waiting for a new console as we were , I took this time for not Use the ethernet cable where the TV is (cable is always faster and more reliable, but I'm sure a wireless signal would work better). Installation was very simple, mounting the stand to the TV was easy, switching between apps, TV and internet was very intuitive. We were worried about having to calibrate the TV picture (recommended in other stores $199.00), but we were glad the picture was ready. There are four photo modes (dynamic, standard, movie and entertainment), we use the dynamic which is very close to the brightness of the LED model. The word is enough for us. With wired internet access, it takes 30 seconds to successfully connect your device. I've read in a couple of other reviews that the Netflix issues need fixing as I haven't received any errors. Apps are great, but with some weird apps you need to create an account. Overall we are very happy with our purchase. I haven't tried 3D yet, but it's fully 3D and I'm sure we'll enjoy it when more 3D titles become available. I hope this long review will be useful. ps we bought a five year service contract for peace of mind, we had a small lcd screen that needed to be fixed first and it was a bit pricey.

...although I have Amazon Warehouse to thank for sending me the 50" version of the C8000 from last year, otherwise I might not have experienced the awesomeness of the 59" D8000! AVSFourmen's excellent (and comprehensive) information leads me to this beauty, because Amazon Warehouse hung me up for a replacement C8000 I bought on BuyDig, and then Amazon still lists new 2011 Samsungs in stock and for sale. I paired mine with a Samsung BD-D6700 3D Blu-ray player using an AmazonBasics High Speed HDMI Cable. I assembled the kit with a Sanus Vlt14-B1 super slim tilt stand. I'm using the Samsung SSG-3100GB 3D glasses that came with the Shrek/Megamind 3D starter kit that was included as a promotional item with this set. About the quality of the image: - generally excellent sharpness. true colors that are not too bright or artificial. when black is black. - no ghosts or shadows. the action is fast and the camera is great with panning. video games were not attempted. - no burlap or film effects; A high refresh rate makes any movement feel smooth and realistic, especially compared to a low refresh rate TV. - it's not as warm as a PC monitor if you're worried it's too big to read small text: but never assembled) it looks "too big". I will do it. This 59" TV is great, but once seated to enjoy it, I don't know how we got through 14 years of suffering without a 32" Trinitron. (*cough, cough) *). DVD players and standard definition movies converted to TVs still look great on this set. No, they're not as clear as high-definition Blu-ray content, but "You're not as locked in as I expected. You'll want to use all the live broadcasts you have. The picture quality will blow your mind when you get the clarity of a standard definition HDTV (It's chargeable. About $28 a month.) - Rear VESA mounting pattern is 800mm x 600mm; tste I connected the Sanus mounting bracket Probably worth making sure the bracket you choose is compatible with this cartridge In this set the 3D movies are the highlight So far I only have the Shrek discs included with the Samsung starter pack, although I found a few others the way. Viewed from about 10 feet from my normal sitting position, the large screen gives the impression of perceptible depth. But we have a wide room, and even seen at a 45° angle, the effect is still there with tr Very little color and brightness (with the 3D glasses on, the image is noticeably dark, especially when the room is bright). Setup and 3D playback are synchronized: The synchronization signal is Bluetooth, so each pair of glasses must be paired the first time you use them. Pairing only requires turning on the glasses, and since the Bluetooth signal is two-way, the TV. it can detect when the glasses are on and provide a brief pop-up notification in the lower left corner. After this initial setup, insert a 3D disc and press play to start the show. When I turn on my Samsung player and insert a disc, the TV automatically turns on and switches to direct input. During the day I watched my movie with a bright overhead light, and the daylight floods in from the two large windows. The muffler cover is awesome! There's no glare, and even the factory screen brightness setting (if I remember correctly it was initially set to 48 levels of brightness) is enough to overcome that ambient light without washing out the deep dark black layers. (The 3D glasses directly reflect the illuminated surfaces behind my head; in this case, a dark room is chosen, I have to create a side shadow for the glasses.) In a dark room, the image is terrible. The built-in speakers in this set also work quite well for audio output. That's fine, but I think you'll agree that it's not up to the job of amplifying audio through an AV receiver to external speakers (in our case the Denon AVR-3311CI which supports the HDMI 1.4a and 3D pass-through). Its QWERTY remote is a big step up from a standard number remote, but it's slower to use and more expensive. The two-way remote emits our traditional infrared signals, just like conventional numbered devices. The keyboard side uses the D8000's Bluetooth, so it's only compatible with TVs, not Samsung DVD players or other devices. The side of the remote keyboard also features a handy thumb sensor - like a Blackberry's trackpad or a laptop keyboard's thumb control - for easier cursor navigation in the built-in web browser and applications. However, try as you can, Web Remote + SmartTV apps can still look quite slick compared to the PC interface. For example, sites like Hulu and NBC won't play flash videos (which I knew before I bought it). So instead I plug my laptop into the HDMI adapter to watch programs streamed via Siig's USB, and at some point in the future I'll switch to a computer with an HDMI output video card. Netflix's TV capabilities are solid. My only complaint is that once I watch a movie and start watching it, then take a break and come back to finish it another day, I have to search a bit to find it. But once I do, it picks up where I left off, and the expected pause, forward, and rewind functions work as expected. However, once in the Netflix app, I disabled access to the TV menu, so I lose the ability to adjust the picture (and sound, if using the TV speaker). It has many necessary functions of TV and smart TV. My Samsung DVD player, and if it was really "smart", couldn't it somehow integrate these Samsung web apps to only work with netflix, youtube, browser, etc. ? Because it must be nice to be able to use everything on the QWERTY remote, including Pandora, since (I think) that's not available as an app on the TV. So, each app has its own login process, like the Netflix process, which is quite different from Pandora or YouTube. The YouTube app needs improvement. It does not use the remote's QWERTY keyboard, instead requiring the user to use cursor buttons to navigate the virtual on-screen keyboard to manage video search. Instead, I use the TV's built-in web browser to access YouTube, which works pretty well, even in full-screen mode. The most sought-after part of the Facebook app will be the photo viewer, which for some inexplicable reason won't support the full-screen size feature, even for full-resolution photos. The rest of the Facebook app is difficult to navigate, read, and update, and never seems to fully load. One final comment on some of the reviews I've read about the silver bezel on the TV: it's not really a glaring problem. In the dark you will never see. In a dimly lit room, it just doesn't appear to me like it does in the product photos shown here and on other sites. It's a really flat finish that doesn't reflect light at all, it goes well with the glassy finish, which I'm not familiar with. Samsung has combined value, plenty of features and a stunning picture into one attractive TV. I can't imagine anything to complain about and would strongly suggest anyone looking to be impressed with its speed check it out at a local electronics store.
