It has great pictures, a lot of great apps, a great remote, everything about it is great except for one thing: the TV doesn't turn on. This TV has a serious firmware error. If there is a significant scene change on the TV, especially if the scene change is due to the sudden appearance of a black screen, the TV will turn off. Unplugging the power cord for a few seconds to reset the TV fixed the problem for a while, but eventually the problem returned. Blu-ray disc playback is not possible. TV turns off approximately every 30 seconds. It happens when you watch something over HDMI, and even (rarely) happens when you watch something on the built-in Netflix app. Apparently the firmware problem is in the code that decodes and displays the image; i doubt the tv will turn off if there is an exception in the code. Google "M550SV" and you're right. As you can see, this is not an unusual problem, but rather a common one. The same goes for the M420SV, the 42-inch version of the TV. Repeated calls to Vizio customer support denied a known issue, claimed it must be "power related" and suggested that I buy a surge protector (I already have one with the TV). When I asked about it, they agreed to send a craftsman to my house to "replace the power supply". Replacing the power supply does not solve the problem with the firmware. The problem is easy to detect by playing back a pre-recorded video where the TV turns off at the same moment every time, as shown in this video. As much as I love this TV, unfortunately I had to return it. I can't live with such a big mistake. And although I have bought (and recommended to others) Vizio TVs (and other products) in the past, this TV will not replace the Vizio. Very bad.

I received this TV on Friday 6/17. Got this after biting my nails a lot due to power/firmware issues. Firstly, the TV is very thin and the picture is very good. I'm still confused by the image options, but I think everything is set to my liking. I've connected it to a Comcast DVR via HDMI as well as an XBOX 360 (also via HDMI) and everything is fine there. I was able to mount the unit close to the wall using the PYLE PSW598UT wall mount (also from Amazon). I hid the socket behind the TV and ran all the wires and it's really nice to have a thin TV and then attach it to the wall. These days the TV is always on and never turns off. I also made the TV detect my wifi router and played around with the app a bit. The remote is a little bulky, but I like the way it works. My only concern is the sound, which is good but not perfect. I changed the sound and EQ settings (set them to ROCK, which seems to have the most bass). But when switching between the devices I was replacing (the current 50-inch Samsung is in a separate room), I noticed that the sound of the Samsung is much better than the Visio. The Vizio 37 has great sound. It's a pity that I have it with a soundbar. I don't think I'll need it for my 55" but it's always possible. I'll update this review as the pros and cons come to light, but right now I'm loving it. **UPDATE** Four have been on TV for years. played around with the video settings, watched quite a lot of baseball, news and other HD content on the last day. don't know if this will benefit everyone, but after looking at the various settings, it seems the best combination is: smooth motion: medium mode Smooth noise reduction: low MPEG NR: color enhancement: rich color, adaptive exposure: low Film: setting light sensor and The picture mode on the VIVID provides a fairly bright screen, but I like it. what it all does, so I just played around with the settings until I decided I got the best. Image. Also, the viewing angles were better than the 50" plasma I've had in this room before. All was good. This is a tree, a sword, and from the corners and throughout the room. It was clear. From the front of the screen, everything is fine, and although it's fine from this angle, the image is dim, so I left the image setting on. I did not change the rest of the video settings at all (brightness, contrast, brightness, etc.). The TV was on and didn't surprise us with a shutdown or anything.

In general, I liked the Vizio M550SV TV. I bought the latest model year from Costco for $1199. They just had a $200 discount coupon and I came back and got some extra savings. While new models are coming out, that's a lot for a TV of this size. I added the $59.99 Square Trade Extended Warranty, so I have 5 years of full coverage. Addition to what I wrote in the comments of other owners. basically it's a good TV that does what you want it to do. It's not the best, just the best for the money. It's an eye-catching option that lacks the flashy silver accents that Vizio has used in the past. The reason I'm adding my review to the list is to let potential buyers know about some of the things I've found. 1.) Firmware update This is Internet TV. Firmware updates are periodically performed over the Internet. This process is automated. If this happens, you will be notified when enabled. Your TV must be connected to the Internet to receive this update. Requires a wireless or wired connection. I have a wired connection and haven't used the wireless version yet. Firmware updates include new VIA apps, TV feature improvements, and app update 2. This is a feature that is hard to come by these days. I think that the appearance of a time shift with Tivo devices and the like. made them less useful for most people, but because I use the QAM tuner on my TV to watch Comcast's basic cable in Boulder, Co., I was able to "watch" another channel at the same time. "I found it valuable to use PIP. Yes, this set has PIP and POP, they are quite effective. PIP places the second image inside the main image, and PIP places it side by side. POP distorts (shrinks) two images side by side to fit on the screen. It's not pretty, but it does the job. Since the TV has a tuner, the second source must be from somewhere else and, in fact, it will be one of the HDMI inputs. My previous TV was a Sony XBR with good pop features. The TV has two tuners and remote control buttons to switch audio/controls/sources between two pictures. Great for "seeing power". The M550SV doesn't have such hotkeys and you have to go back to the menu system to change the volume, which is tedious and time consuming. Therefore, if you try to watch something on another channel during a timeout during a football game, it will be more difficult for you to quickly return to the game because the time has expired. This is just one example of what I call "power management". Maybe not many. I would really appreciate it if Vizio gave me some hot buttons on the remote to control the PIP/POP switch instead of the ridiculous colored hot buttons for the Amazon/Netflix/Vudu Via app. It doesn't really do me much good, as the VIA button takes you to different apps and remembers the last one you used. With a little thought, Vizio could knock PIP/POP out of the park, but I guess beggars can't be Pike 3.) QAM/ATSC tuner The QAM tuner gives you access to basic digital cable channels. Just plug the cable into the back of the device and scan the cable channels. The ATSC tuner allows you to receive digital stations using an antenna. As far as I know, all standard TVs these days are equipped with this feature. If you're using a cable or satellite DVR connected via HDMI, you'll never see it, at least not yet. If you've ever considered ditching premium service and going back to basics or using an antenna on an ATSC tuner, you'll be intrigued. The QAM tuner works well and I expected this to be the "favorite" part. Comcast still gives me all my main cable channels, but in addition to the local Denver/Broomfield stations, channels like WGN, Discovery, TBS, etc. are on legacy locations like 79-2. It would be great to be able to assign both labels to this channel (so you know what it is) and put them in a favorites table that can be selected with the remote control. With a little more attention to detail, Vizio (or whoever designs their stuff) can do the same from the park. I realized that I have to live it. My only problem is that one channel, TBS on the M550SV shows with picture but no sound. I suspect this may be a Comcast issue as it is one channel out of dozens. I have several old Panasonic DVRs with a QAM tuner and they both accept TBS audio and video. And the same channel assignment as the Vizio. But Panasonic's tuners are different, mysteriously picking up multiple channels in different roles, namely two of Broomfield's three PBS stations. I know because I've seen Comcast mix up cable signals all the time. So, perhaps, over time, the TBS problem will be solved. I'm not in the mood to try to serve Comcast customers and if I want to watch TBS I can only use the DVR. This is a strange problem. I don't think this will get me very far with Vizio's customer service, so I won't bother. 4) VIA Applications VIA Applications work great. The Netflix app is working fine. I love ROKU with the Vizio remote app to control Netflix. But the Netflix images coming through the VIA app are of high quality. There is a Skype app that I want, but it requires an expensive webcam sold by VIzio and no other device works. Kind of silly and they don't seem to sell much. I would love to have a very simple web app on set for quick internet access every time to save on trips upstairs to my office, but I don't have a wireless tablet to fiddle around with... Twitter seems to offer minimal control, and it upsets me 5.) Remote control. It works well, but it's small and the buttons are hard to master. Vizio tries to fit as many buttons as possible in the smallest space for several reasons. You can find this image online by searching for "M550SV REMOTE". You can see how they are arranged and most of the keys are the same size and close together. I love learning remote controls and using them from memory/feel in a dark room. I am telling you that it will take me a long time to learn this remote control at that stage in my life where I forget as soon as I learn something when I am not using it every day. The remote control keypad on the back of the remote works great and is just as difficult to use as other small keyboards. This is really useful for setting up apps and TV presets. 6.) picture settings. The picture settings provided are not acceptable. I work with a Blu-ray calibration disc and find it to be a good starting point for adjusting the picture, settings can vary a lot. image mode. standard brightness. 53 contrast. 62 colors. 49 colors. -3 sharpness. 8 color temperature. automatically work automatically, but I cannot use it, turn off or reduce all other advanced compensators (flow rate, etc.). you don't really have to, but watch things (movies and sports) and see what you think. The menu/settings system is painless and I recommend that you explore every option in the menu system to fully customize your TV. I can't remember what I did, but something like stopping the blinking of the Visio logo in the frame is what I really want to do. -------------------------------------------------- --- ---------------------------------- ------- ------ ----- I hope this information, along with other reviews, will be very useful to buyers / owners.
