At the time of this writing (September 25, 2011), I've had the Sony XBR-55HX929 for just over two months, so I thought it was time to share my experience. I have nothing to add to the other (positive) comments made, but I thought I would add to the collective consciousness. Let's start with a little background: I've owned at least five HDTVs since then. March 2011: 62" Mitsubishi WD-62525 (rear projection TV with 720p native resolution), Panasonic TC-P55ST30 (plasma), Samsung PN59D6500 (also plasma), Samsung UN55D6900 (LCD with sidelight and LED52-LED backlight) and local dimming .Mitsubishi died at the end of March and I was looking for a replacement. Image quality: I use the settings recommended by David Katzmayer (of CNET). Viewed directly, front and center at eye level, the image is outstanding (4.5 out of 5 stars). Blacks are really black: deep, inky, and almost indistinguishable from ringtones, especially when viewed from high-quality sources like Blu-ray. This is the only TV I've ever owned that has as black as a Panasonic plasma. These deep blacks produce excellent contrast, which (along with strong shadow detail and good gamma) gives the picture a natural depth and "glow" that captivates viewers. Colors are rich and realistic. Shadow detail is excellent. The Blu-ray movies I've seen in this set are Toy Story 3, Baraka, Master and Commander, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Rango. They all looked absolutely fantastic (although I generally give credit to Toy Story 3). Best home theater I've ever had. I am always amazed by the picture on this TV. Comparison with Samsung UN55D6900 LCD screen. The Samsung's colors were excellent (once you get the user-customizable settings right - the Samsung's is pretty easy thanks to its RGB-only mode: one of my favorites about the Samsung over the Sony). Still, it's at least as good as the Sony (I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, so it's hard to say for sure which one was better). However, there is one area where Sony is clearly, and in my opinion, significantly better than Samsung. Samsung is an edge-lit LED LCD (like all of Samsung's high-end LCDs), meaning the LEDs that provide the TV's picture light shine from the edge of the TV parallel to the TV's surface. LCD screen Like many Samsung LCD owners (see user forums), I was very concerned about flickering (when the LED lights bleed into the edges of the image), distortion (areas of the screen appear brighter than they should), and general inconsistencies. The dark scenario that this set shows. Sony's full-size LED backlight (where the light-producing LEDs are located behind the screen, emitting light from or perpendicular to the surface of the LCD), in this case, with local dimming axes. Sony can't compete with Panasonic or Samsung plasmas in this aspect of picture quality. However, the viewing angles are not as bad as I feared from reading the reviews and comments from other users. The blur gets worse if you move away from front and center when the material is dark, but my normal viewing distance is about 10 feet from where I can sit on either side of the couch (three-cushion couch, 6.5 feet). ) and very little change is visible in the image. I'd say the viewing angles are on par with a Samsung LCD (although I haven't done much testing - I was mostly concerned with the relative uniformity of the display). For ESPN sports and most cable/local shows, I can walk from one side of the room to the other without an annoying loss of picture quality. Bloom (a "halo" of light that shouldn't surround a bright object against a dark background): It happens, but not as badly as I feared. (Note that some blurring is almost inevitable on LED-backlit LCD TVs.)
